25th March 2007

Well, here we are, another winter series of fun days at Barnwell has come to an end.

I think most people were a little worried about today . . with all the icy windy weather we had in the last week or so, and then to cap it all the clocks went forward!

We needn’t have worried, it was a bit fresh in the morning and there was a definite chill in the air, but when the sun broke through the clouds it was lovely.

Suki Middlemiss was our agility judge and set a somewhat challenging course.  I did not run the helter skelter course she set for the afternoon but that also looked a little more difficult than we are used to.

Viv White was our jumping judge and both her jumping and helter skelter courses flowed well, just what was needed.

For both of them, this was their first time of judging.

Our group was running the jumping ring all day and a huge thank you must go to Gemma who was there virtually all the time.  Everyone from OAK who was there helped in some way so thanks to Gail, Hayley, Sally-Anne, Wendy,  Sarah, John and Dawn.

Gail ran Skye for the first time and, I think, did better than she thought, only 5 faults.  It was quite interesting to watch John and (his) Ice . . she had a wonderful time and I’m sure will do well in the future.

As a group we did fairly well as far as places and rosettes are concerned – except for Gemma, who, for the first time, didn’t even manage a clear round.  I don’t think the early start agreed with Fliss and Trio!!

So to the results, and well done to the following;

It was good to see virtually everyone at the presentations at the end of the day – thanks for staying.

Presentations also took place for the best overall dog and handler combination for the winter series in each category and I am very pleased to say the John and Kelly were the best overall starters.  CONGRATULATIONS.

A little bit of bad news . . although the venue had already been provisionally booked for next winter, when Carl went to pay the deposit, he was given a letter saying that no dog shows at all were being allowed at the village hall in the future.

So, if anyone knows of a suitable venue – not too costly – for next winter, please let us know.

In the meantime, good luck to everyone for the summer shows.

FEBRUARY ‘07 newsletter

Apologies for the lack of a report from the January fun day at Barnwell, I was not there because of a bad back, and for one reason or another I didn’t manage to catch up with all the results.  A belated well done to anyone who managed a clear round and / or a place.

Sunday 18th February, the day OAK, together with Spalding and a few members of Racingredd were in charge of all the indoor bits and pieces.  Spalding members worked very hard in the kitchen all day and are to be congratulated for their efforts there.  It is very difficult to gauge how much food to ‘do’ for these fun days and so it proved on Sunday as there was no cake left when the time came for presentations!!

We cannot be certain why there were so many more people at this event than the previous 3, but it could have been something to do with dog measuring being available!  It did mean that we were very busy when it came to booking in and taking care of all the results.  Many thanks to Gemma, Marion, Ken and Les, for all their hard work there.

The raffle was HUGE!!  We somehow manage to have the biggest raffle of all the Fun Days, so many thanks for all the donations and for help in folding the tickets.  Special mention here to Gemma, Ken and also to June and Terry who only came to visit!

Our judges for the day were Emma Quinn in the jumping ring and Mike Fairlamb in the agility ring.  Both judges set fair courses and I was pleased to see that all our competing members came away with at least a clear round rosette.  Unfortunately I was not able to see many of the rounds as I was busy all day.

Our members results were as follows:-

Small jumping

          Gemma & Trio      clear round

Wendy & Ludo     clear round

Starters jumping

          John & Kelly                   4th

          Ken & Barney                 10th

          Dawn & Flyte                 clear round

          Frances & Ice                 clear round

          Ken & Barney                 5th

          Frances & Ice                 clear round

Small helter-skelter

          Gemma & Trio      clear round

Dawn & Tutti                  clear round

Frances & Zarka    not for competition clear round

Medium helter-skelter

          Gemma & Fliss     clear round

Starters helter-skelter

          John & Kelly                   4th

Sarah & Daisy                 clear round – and judges special

          Ken & Barney                 clear round

Very well done to everyone, there were not many of us competing from OAK and it was good to see all of you at the presentations.

Our newest member – Sarah & Daisy (a Dalmatian) were awarded a judges special by Mike as he was impressed by the way Daisy worked, not only because she was a Dalmatian (not the easiest of breeds for agility) but also because it was the first time she had worked outside and she was just out of the placings.

The next fun day is on Sunday 25th March and will be the last of the winter series.  Together with Spalding we are responsible for running the rings at this event so lots of help will be needed.

We have had quite a few new people join us at Keysoe on a Thursday evening this year, welcome to Andrea with Bryn & Kai - collies; Nadia with Waffle - spaniel; Glynnis with Koji – retriever; Kirsty with Mia – collie; Sally with Pixie – sheltie; and Sarah with Daisy – Dalmatian.

Our early classes in particular are now rather larger than we would like, and we would like to thank everyone for their patience as we try and organise things so that everyone has as much training as possible in the available time.  I am very grateful to Gemma, Tig and Brad for their help on training nights.

Carry on with the good work everyone and have fun!

NOVEMBER (and virtually December) newsletter

It is that time of year when we think there is plenty of time before Christmas to buy all the presents, write the cards, organise pre-Christmas visits etc. etc. – and then suddenly, it’s less than 4 weeks away and what have we done . . . well if you are anything like me, nothing – panic!

I suddenly realised that, besides anything else, I had not sent the write-up of the last Barnwell day to Gail for inclusion on the web site – oops!  The report is included in this newsletter.

A little reminder here, just in case you miss the notices on the board at club – and my nagging – that there will be no training on December 21st and 28th .

Anyway, on to Barnwell on 12th November ……….

When we arrived at Barnwell there were about ten caravans on the field!!  I don’t think the inhabitants were woken too early as we spent quite a bit of time trying to clear the remains of sparklers from the field following the fireworks the previous Sunday.  Despite our best efforts, it was surprising how many more we found as the day went on!  The remains of the bonfire was still smouldering and the surrounding area was fenced off (thank goodness for orange netting) because there was also quite a bit of glass around.

We had a lovely dry day and even some sunshine, it got quite warm during the early afternoon.

Everyone from OAK who competed came away with a rosette – well done. Special congratulations to both Hayley and Tipsy and Dawn and Tutti with their first ever places - keep them coming Guys!

Our judges for the day were Janet and Alan Humphreys and the OAK results were as follows;

Very well done to everyone and it was good to see a few of you at the presentations.  What we lacked in numbers we made up for in volume!!

The club managing the rings was short of helpers as it is small (like us) and a huge THANK YOU goes to Les for scribing all day for Janet in the jumping ring.  I helped in both rings when I was able, and thank you to anyone else who offered to help and I didn’t see.

The next fun day is on 21st January when we are due to run the rings along with our ‘partners in crime’ Spalding.  More news of this after Christmas.

Good luck to anyone going to the Masters agility event at Keysoe on 2nd December – see you at club on 7th.

OCTOBER ’06 NEWSLETTER

Nearly Halloween so look out for all those witches and ghosts.  I must remind my Mum to take care on her broomstick!!!

From the number of fireworks about at the moment you would think it was Bonfire night already.  Only a few days away so please take care of all your animals and keep safe yourself too.

Going back to the Rescue Dogs’ Finals attended by Dawn, John and Gemma in September. They all had an enjoyable weekend and were pleased with their results.  John and Kelly came 9th in the starter class, Dawn and Flyte 10th in the novice, Gemma with Fliss and Trio did very well in the medium and small classes respectfully.  One came 7th and the other 8th in their class.  (I forgot to write down which dog achieved which place – sorry)

Very well done to you all, it is never easy taking part in a final.

On 8th October quite a few of us went to the Peterborough showground to take part in a limited agility show organised by Spalding club (this is the same Spalding we are teamed with at the Barnwell fun days).

There were some notable performances by Gemma’s Fliss coming 1st in the medium helter skelter, and 2nd in both the jumping and agility classes.  Not to be outdone Trio also came 1st in the small helter skelter.

The surprise of the day for John had to be winning the starters agility with Kelly.

What about the rest of us? A good day out, lots of great dogs to watch, quite a lot of other things to see as it was part of the Rare Breeds Show.

The first of this year’s fun days at Barnwell was on 22nd October.  Compared with previous events it was very quiet, but that did mean that everyone could have an early finish and also beat the rain!

There were not many competitors from our group, but those who went did very well.  I was pleased to see Olivia and her Mum there showing Knoxley what it was all about, and perhaps thinking of having a go later on.

Now to the results – or at least the ones involving our members …

Wendy was very pleased with her young dog Elsa who managed to get a clear round.

Elsa is not old enough to compete at standard shows, but at these fun days we allow dogs over a year old (or dogs not able to compete at the correct height for their size) to have a run ‘not for competition’. Wendy is working very hard on Elsa’s training and I think this will be a dog to watch in the future.

Well done to everyone whether you have competed at open shows or our fun day.

The next fun day is on 12th November.  This will be hosted by RVA with rings run by Empingham.

Empingham – like most of the groups taking part in the fun days – is quite a small group, so if you notice that there are not many people on the ring and they appear to be struggling, please offer to help.

SEPTEMBER ’06 NEWSLETTER

Welcome to OAK Agility’s new look web site and to the first newsletter.  I am hoping to make this a regular feature so if you have any news or interesting items you would like included please let me (Frances) or any of the trainers know.

Firstly a big thank you to Gail for getting the web site up and running again.

We are virtually at the end of another busy summer agility season and there have been some good results for several of our members.

Dawn & Flyte qualified for the Genesis Novice jumping final held at Peterborough in June.  They didn’t win but enjoyed their run on a tricky course.  Besides this, both Dawn and John have had some very good placings at most of the shows they have been to.  It will not be long before John is out of starters (or its equivalent next year!) with Kelly and you never know, Tutti may decide not to hide in the tunnel and get another clear round or even a place!

Wendy has had some excellent runs with both Ludo and Enya (once she had got over having the puppies) and s Enya’s daughter is nearly a year old now it will not be so very long before we will see her competing too.

There are quite a few small and medium dogs from our group who are competing now and they are starting to get together for team events.  They have not made it to the top just yet but watch out next year!

Gemma with Fliss and Trio have ventured further afield this year for competition (with help and encouragement from Wendy) and in July both dogs won out of elementary at Empingham show.  There have been more trophies and good places since and we are sure that there are more to come.

Both of Gemma’s dogs have been invited to the final of a rescue dog league event to be held on the weekend of 23rd/24th September.  We hope they all enjoy their day.

At the Aylesbury Show in August, June and Maggie won out of elementary in great style. This was a great achievement for June, and I hope she will forgive me for saying that she is not as young and agile as she was and has to trust Maggie to get her out of trouble! June never thought she would compete at open shows, but this just goes to show how capable a team she and Maggie make and we hope that you keep well and are able to compete again next year.

Gail and Hayley have not been to many shows this year, due mainly to Sunnie having a litter of puppies and all the extra work that that entails.  Hayley is working both dogs exceedingly well and had two clear rounds with Tipsy at Wellingborough in Medium Jumping and Medium Helter Skelter.

Susan’s young tearaway Tommee has been improving all the time at shows and has at last had a couple of places.  I am sure that a trophy will not be so very long in coming.

Laura had the shock of her life in August, at a limited show, when she won an agility class with her dog Josie!  Both Josie and Otter (he was Mum’s dog once) are working very well and have improved tremendously over the year.

So, with the summer shows out of the way there are just a few weeks now before the Winter Fun Days at Barnwell Village Hall (or at least the field by the side of the hall!!).  Everyone currently attending training at OAK on a Thursday is welcome.

Notices will be up at Keysoe on club nights but the dates are as follows

DATE              HOST CLUB                           RING PARTY

22.10.06          Barking Mad                            RVA

12.11.06          RVA                                        Empingham

21.01.07          Empingham                               Spalding / OAK

18.02.07          Spalding / OAK                       Godmanchester

25.03.07          Godmanchester                        Barking Mad

The next newsletter will hopefully include a report of the first Fun Day, so good luck at any shows you go to between now and then.

Don’t forget to let me know how you get on.

Frances
